Wealth Problems
Wealth Problems?
“If they can’t find one, let me know right away. I may have
to buy another car”(Morrison 266).
Milkman’s car broke down and casually brags about his wealth,
loudly stating his intentions of getting a brand new one. Local African Americans were offended, as
majority could not even have their basic needs, like food, met. (Milkman got beaten up) he tactlessly made
this announcement without any consideration of the poverty around him. This situation can be seen everywhere today. The
division of rich and poor. In the UK, designer jackets like Canada Goose are banned
in some public schools in an effort to shield disadvantaged children. Canada
Goose is a high quality jackets and expensive brand that’s could cost as much
as $1000, a week’s grocery for a family
of four to some. Just like some kids in our school wear Gucci or drives a Tesla.
Can you imagine if there is a banned on luxury brands in our school? Children follow trends, keep up with the status, set by celebrities and
athletes, which help generate the market for such products. Almost everyone knew the brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, etc. They also know
what they can afford, although some can afford but choose not to have them. I would say it would depend on the kind of
environment that one is in, for both the rich and the poor. Troy is pretty
much spread out, and can be considered an upper middle class community. Wearing a luxury brand here would not be offensive to anyone, it's just a choice. If you drive a Tesla into a lesser desirable
neighborhood, the car will either be stolen or stripped. That is why crime
rates in these areas are high. The cause is greed, jealousy and ignorance. In this case, Milkman was either ignorant or
insensitive of the culture around him. Only
after he was beaten that he learned his lesson, not to display his excess when people around him have none.
Wow I really like this blog post! I like how you differentiated the status and how it can affect some. I think blog post can apply to everyone in one way or another.
